Preparing for your first waxing session
We all had a first time, right? It can seem slightly overwhelming when you're considering your first female waxing treatment, and that's perfectly natural.
The entire purpose of this article is to make women feel more relaxed about losing their 'waxing cherry', and to help make it easy for you to sort out the good waxing therapists from the bad.
I know that 90% of my visitors here are from the US and Europe, but the info should translate to whatever country you're from.
We will get up close and personal on the topic, but that's what we're here for. 🍑👍
Female Waxing Tips - Before
- Waxing hurts more in the days leading up to and during your period. This is due to the prolonged and cyclic stress during menstruation, which in turn releases cortisol which increases your sensitivity to pain. So, in short, try to avoid getting waxed when your period is about to kick in.
- Keep it a secret that you're going in for a wax. Friends - let's use that term loosely - seem to relish the opportunity to scare the heck out of first timers when it comes to waxing. Keep it to yourself and come in calm and relaxed, not stressed out. That's the only thing you should be focused on.
- If you're bringing in your tween or teen daughter to have 'unfeminine' hair removed, don't carry on about how awful it is for them, or use thoughtless words. She already feels like crap. The more you go on about it, the worse she'll feel.
- Wear comfortable loose clothing to your treatment. If you are having a bikini wax or Brazilian wax, don't wear satin or synthetic underwear to your treatment. Wear loose-fitting cotton knickers so your skin can breathe, or better still, wear no undies at all.
- Don't clipper your hair. If you trim it too short, there might not be enough length for the wax to grip. If your hair needs trimming, your waxing therapist won't mind doing it.
- Moisturise the night before or morning of your waxing treatment. This puts your skin in the best possible condition ahead of your wax and also helps create a subtle barrier. If your skin is super-dry, the wax will stick to it more.
- Avoid having sex on the morning of a Brazilian wax treatment so that your labia and perineum are not overly sensitive.
- If you decide to have a shower to freshen up before your wax, don't soap your skin and strip away the natural oils from the area to be waxed. Your skin's natural moisture is perfectly fine.
- Finally, if you have any questions at all, don't be scared that you know nothing. A good therapist will have no issue at all answering all your questions. Everybody had a first time. Just relax.
Female Waxing Tips - After
- To help soothe the area afterwards, use a good quality after-waxing cream or body milk until the skin has calmed down. At around three weeks when new growth begins to show, use it again. Your waxing therapist will be able to recommend or provide a quality post-wax lotion for under $20 that will last multiple treatments.
- Don't put pure tea tree oil on your skin after waxing. It is too strong for this purpose. Also avoid generic antiseptics as they will likely cause an infection, not defeat it. Aloe vera is another alternative with good healing properties.
- Don't swim in chlorinated pools or hot tubs until your skin has calmed down.
- Salt is a natural antiseptic. If you live near the beach, your skin will truly appreciate a swim in clean salt water after your wax - preferably no sun on the area though until it's all calmed down. You can also make a calming saline wash with half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water.
- Avoid colognes and antiperspirants until your skin has returned to normal.
- There is no need to exfoliate the area for at least seven days. Doing so before the skin has calmed will actually cause in-grown hairs and infections, so just don't.
- As regrowth comes through at about the 3 week mark, gently exfoliate each day then follow with your after-wax lotion.
- Your waxing sessions should be around 4 to 6 weeks apart. Your hair should be at least 5mm long for the wax to grip successfully. Your therapist will recommend the ideal time span for you.
